2024 Fantasy Outlook
Martinez, who opted out of the final two years of his contract with San Diego in November, recently agreed to terms with Cincinnati that includes an increased salary and opt-out after the 2024 season. The 33-year-old mixes five pitches effectively, with his 80 mph changeup (46.5% whiff) and curveball his best offerings. He produced a career-best 23 percent strikeout rate last season to supplement his elite ground ball rate (53.8%). Martinez has been excellent since his return to the States in 2022 and is capable of starting, closing, setup duties or long relief. His versatility should benefit the Reds pitching staff, but it's worth noting he performed better across nine starts (2.32 ERA, 1.08 WHIP over 42.2 innings) last year than he did over 54 relief appearances (4.12 ERA, 1.37 WHIP over 67.2 innings). Earns second win
Martinez (2-3) allowed one hit over 4.1 scoreless innings to earn the victory Sunday against the Dodgers. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Martinez followed Brent Suter, who faced three batters and served as the opener, tossing 64 pitches while working through the fifth to pick up his second victory of the season. Martinez has now earned both of his wins this season against the Dodgers in similar fashion. Ten days ago, Martinez worked five innings of relief and allowed one baserunner while earning the win in LA, then pulled off the same feat over 4.1 innings Sunday. With Nick Lodolo (groin) slated to return to the rotation Monday, Martinez looks primed to return to his usual long-relief role.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Option for rotation?
Martinez will likely be considered to step into the Reds' starting rotation after Graham Ashcraft was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Martinez has started in five of his 14 appearances for Cincinnati this season, though he's pitched much better out of the bullpen with a 1.05 ERA over 25.2 innings compared to a 7.36 ERA as a starter. The Reds have two team off days next week, so the club could get by with four starters in the short term. Brandon Williamson is nearing his return from a shoulder injury and could also step into the rotation. Even if Martinez is called upon to start, it would likely be for an outing or two before he returns to a relief role.

Martinez returned to the States in 2022, signing with the Padres after spending four years pitching in Japan. The 32-year-old won a spot in the rotation and made 10 starts before shifting to long relief, a role he would thrive in over the remainder of the season. Martinez had a 2.67 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 54 innings as a reliever, compared to a 4.30 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 52.1 innings as a starter. He finished the campaign with a solid 3.47 ERA and was one of San Diego's most important pitchers down the stretch, tallying eight holds and eight saves as their fill-in closer while Josh Hader overcame his struggles. Martinez declined his $6.5 million player option for 2023, but quickly re-signed with San Diego on a new three-year deal with incentives based on games started, relief appearances and games finished. He'll have a better shot to start based on the departures of Mike Clevinger and Sean Manaea, but don't be surprised if the Padres are flexible with his role again.
