Byeong Hun An

32-Year-Old Golfer
2024 Fantasy Outlook
An played in 31 events this past season and made the cut in over 77% of them. He also earned over $3 million this past season, which was a career high. Those are the highlights, now the troubling part. An didn't often fare well when playing elevated events. He was also suspended at the end of the season for three months because of a banned substance in his system. The substance in question is available over the counter in his homeland, so perhaps that's much ado about nothing, but that stigma could prove problematic going forward. In other words, An, who has been very consistent to this point in his career, is a bit of a wild card this season. Read Past Outlooks
Back-to-back top-four finishes
May 12, 2024
An fired a five-under 66 in the final round of the Wells Fargo Championship to finish in solo third place.
ANALYSIS
An was the best of the rest this week with Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele so far out in front of the field. He had a great week for DFS purposes making 23 birdies for the week, which was the most in the field. An led the field in SG: Putting, something he can be pretty hot and cold with. An has had a great season with now four top-four finishes, and two in the last two weeks heading into the PGA Championship.

The PGA Tour missed An this past season after he landed just 164th in the FedExCup standings at the end of the 2020-21 campaign, which ended his streak of three straight BMW Championship appearances when he finished 53rd or better in he FedExCup standings from 2018 to 2020. Upon his relegation, An made 20 starts on the KFT in 2022, tallying eight top-25 finishes. More importantly, he won the LECOM Suncoast Classic in February and tied for second two months later at the Veritex Bank Championship. However, he currently resides outside of the top 300 in the Official World Golf Ranking, and his days as a top-20 tee-to-green player on the PGA Tour seem like a distant memory.
An is one a small number of golfers on the PGA Tour that wasn't greatly affected by the shortened season. An teed it up 22 times this past season, which was on par with his previous three seasons and his earnings number was the second highest of his career. An should continue to improve this season, but since his cap number was not greatly affected by the pandemic, there's simply not much value there in salary cap leagues.
An performed well during his rookie season of 2017, as he carded three top-10s and over $1 million in earnings. An's sophomore season was much better as he finished runner-up on two occasions and topped $2.5 million in earnings. This past season, An's third was decent, but he certainly didn't build upon his success from the previous season. An looks like the real deal though and his slight set back last season puts him in a good spot for a bounce-back this season.
An has performed well on the PGA Tour, really since day one. He played 14 events as a non-member in 2016 and won nearly $1 million. As a full-time member the following season, An finished inside the top-100 on the FedEx points list. Last season, his third on the PGA Tour, An upped his game even more, finishing runner-up twice and pulling-in over $2.5 million. An is tremendous from tee to green, ranking in the top-25 in strokes-gained off the tee as well as strokes-gained on approach to the green. He's even pretty good with his short game, but he just can't putt very well. He did show improvement from years two to three, however, and he's so bad at putting currently, that even a slight improvement on the green could result in a big gain in money and FedEx points. The problem is, he set the bar pretty high last season. But An looks like the real deal and he should have enough upside to justify a salary cap selection this season ... if he improves his putting.
An made a nice jump from more than $900k in his rookie season, to more than $1.2 million last season. An also made the bulk of his money during the 2017 portion of the season, which is always nice. The problem with An is, he hasn't played many events on the PGA Tour. He played just 14 times two seasons ago and only 22 times this past season. An is just 26, so there's plenty of room to improve, but for fantasy purposes, he won't significantly improve until he plays more often. If word comes out that he plans to play more in the states this season, he's in-play as a salary cap candidate, if not, he's not a great option.
The young Korean is a former U.S. Amateur champ and European Tour Rookie of the Year who is only getting better. He is only 25 and will be in all the majors/WGCs, but we just don't know his plans for regular tour events. Keep a close eye. He could be a steal.
