2024 Fantasy Outlook
Avila split his time between Triple-A El Paso and San Diego, but is likely hoping his days in El Paso are over. The run environment in that park is hostile to pitchers and Avila has allowed 29 homers there over the past two seasons while allowing just 5 homers in 63.2 innings of work at the big league level. Avila had whiff rates better than 40% on both his changeup and curveball last season and he mixes his pitches and spots up to get one of the best groundball rates (60.3%) in all of baseball. He worked both as a traditional starter as well as a bulk pitcher last season so it is rather silly to look at his splits in that area other than to note his numbers were more effective in bulk outings than they were when he came in as a traditional starter. That small sample size does not tell us as much as the fact Avila is a favorite to be in the rotation this year for San Diego as they realign their budgetary priorities for a post-Soto & Snell world. Grabs three-inning save
Avila struck out six and walked two over three scoreless and hitless innings to earn the save in Saturday's 8-0 win over the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Avila was scored on in nine of his first 12 outings, but he's settled down lately. He's currently on an 8.2-inning scoreless streak, during which he has a 12:2 K:BB. His save Saturday was the first of his major-league career, though it was his multi-inning abilities in a blowout win that allowed him to pick it up. He's now at a 4.60 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 37:11 K:BB through 31.1 innings between the Padres and the Guardians this year. He's trimmed his ratios to a 3.09 ERA and 1.07 WHIP since he was traded to Cleveland in mid-April. Avila is no threat to challenge for consistent high-leverage work.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
The Padres removed Avila from their 40-man roster last June, but he made his way back on following a strong finished at Triple-A El Paso. The 26-year-old has plenty of experience both as a starter and a reliever and has missed bats in both roles. What he hasn't done is throw strikes consistently, especially not since making it back from Tommy John surgery in 2021. The bullpen would seem to be the easier path to a significant role with the Padres for Avila and he would have some work to do before being trusted in leveraged spots.
