Jackson should have a significant role early in the season, as Dianna Russini and James Boyd of The Athletic relay that Jonathan Taylor will have to miss at least the first four games after having been placed on the PUP list due to an ankle injury.

Jackson started two of the Colts' three preseason games, and he could start the Sept. 10 regular-season opener against Jacksonville if Zack Moss's recovery from a broken arm stretches into September. Moss is likely to get the majority of rushing attempts in Taylor's absence once healthy, but Jackson is the better pass catcher out of the backfield. The Colts also drafted a proficient receiving back in Evan Hull in the fifth round this April.

Jackson saw extensive work last season when Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines missed playing time (and Hines was later traded). In 16 games, the 24-year-old rushed 68 times for 236 yards and a touchdown while catching 30 of 34 targets for 209 yards and a receiving score. Jackson is seen as a capable pass catcher out of the backfield, so he could potentially win a role off the bench in passing situations. After returning for the veteran minimum, however, he's not a lock to make the roster, with 2023 fifth-round draft pick Evan Hull also in the mix for the Colts' No. 3 running back role.
