Set for contract discussions
Heinen and the Bruins are expected to begin negotiations on a new contract before free agency opens July 1, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Heinen struggled in previous stints with Anaheim and Pittsburgh but excelled this season in his second go-around with the Bruins. In 74 regular-season appearances, the 28-year-old winger notched 17 goals and 36 assists while averaging 14:28 of ice time. If he does re-up with Boston, Heinen should remain in a third-line role but could be elevated to the top six throughout the year when injuries inevitably pop up.

Heinen has bounced around since leaving Boston, spending a year-plus with the Ducks before arriving in Pittsburgh last season. He posted a career-high 18 goals in addition to managing 33 points, his highest total since the 2018-19 campaign. Heinen ended up being non-qualified by the Penguins before re-signing with the club on a one-year, $1 million deal. Heinen will return to his middle-six role with the club while also seeing some time on the second power-play unit, although his usage doesn't figure to be high enough to make him an option in anything but the deepest fantasy formats.
