Chris Rodriguez

23-Year-Old Running BackRB
Washington Commanders
2024 Fantasy Outlook
A 2023 sixth-round pick, Rodriguez didn't get double-digit snaps on offense until Week 11 last year but flashed upside once he did. He averaged 4.8 yards per carry, and his 2.4-yard average after contact would have been a top-five mark in the league if he'd seen enough volume to qualify. Rodriguez suffered a season-ending ankle injury Week 16, and while he should be healthy in time for training camp, he'll like be third on the depth chart behind Brian Robinson and Austin Ekeler. It is possible new offensive coordinator isn't as fond of Robinson as the old coaching staff was, and the 224-pound Rodriguez can offer a similar element of powerful running between the tackles. Likely RB3 for Washington
RBWashington Commanders
May 24, 2024
With the Commanders not selecting a running back in last month's draft, Rodriguez profiles as the team's No. 3 option at running back behind Austin Ekeler and Brian Robinson, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Standig, Rodriguez, who's presumably past his late-season ankle issue, appears to be the clear early-down backup to Robinson. However, with Ekeler also in the mix and destined to see plenty of touches, notably in passing situations, Rodriguez doesn't initially have a path to steady volume as the 2024 season approaches. As a rookie, the 2023 sixth-rounder recorded 51 carries for 247 yards and two TDs to go along with two catches for 12 yards in 13 regular-season contests. Also currently in the Commanders' depth RB mix are Jeremy McNichols, Austin Jones and Michael Wiley (thumb).

Bumped down to third-string role
RBWashington Commanders
March 13, 2024
Rodriguez is expected to be Washington's third-string running back in 2024 after Austin Ekeler agreed to a two-year contract with the Commanders on Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Rodriguez showed some promise down the stretch in his rookie season, scoring two touchdowns in Week 16 against the Jets before being shut down for the final two games due to an ankle injury. The 2023 sixth-round draft pick presumably has the inside track on the third-string role once healthy, but Rodriguez is unlikely to leapfrog either Ekeler or Brian Robinson on the depth chart.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Rodriguez landed in Washington in the sixth round of the 2023 Draft, after a prolific college career at Kentucky with 3,600 rushing yards and 33 TDs over the past four seasons. He only caught 20 passes, and a 4.52 40 at his pro day suggests the 224-pounder is more likely to be a power back than a big-play threat in the NFL. That could put him in play for some of the work 2022 third-rounder Brian Robinson got last season en route to a 205-797-2 rushing line in 12 games. The Commanders also still have Antonio Gibson, who got a career-high 58 targets last season despite competing with J.D. McKissic for passing-down snaps in the first half of the year.
