Likely headed for backup role again
Mariota will be joined by fellow Heisman winner and No. 2 overall draft pick Jayden Daniels in Washington's QB room.
ANALYSIS
The incoming rookie was a four-year college starter (five if you count a COVID-shortened season) and is already 23 years old, making him a strong bet to quickly take over as QB1 in Washington. Mariota presumably knew the Commanders were likely to use the No. 2 overall pick on a quarterback when he signed with them in March, but the team at least traded Sam Howell to Seattle, leaving the 30-year-old unchallenged for a backup role. It remains to be seen how the Commanders divide reps between Daniels and Mariota this spring and into summer.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could start Monday in Seattle
Mariota could be called upon to make his first start of the season Monday in Seattle, as Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Jalen Hurts has been downgraded to questionable against the Seahawks after Hurts' illness worsened overnight.
ANALYSIS
Hurts is hoping he'll feel well enough to play Monday, but his illness has worsened after the Philadelphia starting quarterback was held out of Saturday's practice. Mariota has been limited to two relief appearances in 2023, but he has 74 NFL starts under his belt, including 13 with the Falcons in 2022.

After going two seasons without a start, Mariota spent most of last year as Atlanta's top quarterback. He started 13 games before being benched for rookie Desmond Ridder and finished the year on injured reserve due to a knee injury. His performance in those outings makes it easy to see why he'll be back in a reserve role this fall, backing up Jalen Hurts for the Eagles. Mariota's mobility makes him a good fit as Hurts' main reserve, as his 438 rushing yards in 2022 ranked sixth among all QBs, but he didn't do much with his arm. He ranked 30th in passing yards per game (170.7), clearing 200 yards just three times and topping out at 253. He added 15 touchdowns and nine picks.
