2025 Fantasy Outlook
Last spring, not many had Gil on their list of top AL Rookie of the Year candidates, but he has some hardware to display on his mantle. His award-winning campaign was driven by a 0.70 ERA in May (3.01 xFIP). His ERA was 4.00 or higher in four of the six months, with three months of an xFIP over 4.35. His season-long 4.36 xFIP and 4.22 SIERA warn of a correction from a 3.50 actual mark. A low .237 BABIP and a high 78.8 percent left on base mark are candidates to regress. Gil can fend off regression by lowering a high 12.1 percent walk rate. His 26.8 percent strikeout rate was 14th highest among pitchers with at least 150 innings, but his K-BB percentage was just 39th. Pitchers usually improve control the second season removed from Tommy John surgery, so optimism is warranted, just remember he's also due a visit from the regression monster. Read Past Outlooks

Struggles in return
PNew York Yankees
August 3, 2025
Gil (0-1) yielded five runs on five hits and four walks over 3.1 innings Sunday, striking out three and taking a loss against Miami.
Analysis
Gil was reinstated from the injured list to make his 2025 debut after recovering from a lat injury. He couldn't find his groove against a red-hot Marlins squad; Gil coughed up three runs in the second inning and was charged with two more when Kyle Stowers knocked a home run off reliever Brent Headrick in the fourth. Gil threw 77 pitches (44 strikes) but forced only five whiffs. He threw 75 pitches in his final rehab outing with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, so he should be expected to have a fairly regular workload moving forward. He's projected for a home matchup against the Astros next weekend.

Stat Review
How does Luis Gil compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH
The percentage of batted balls hit that met or exceeded the 95 MPH threshold.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2022
2020
Gil underwent Tommy John surgery in May of 2022 and made it back for two appearances at Triple-A in September of 2023. His mid-to-upper-90s fastball velocity was back, averaging 96 mph while touching 99 mph. His devastating high-spin slider was also at its pre-surgery 85-86 mph velocity. This is his last season with a minor-league option, so the 25-year-old righty may move back and forth between Triple-A and the majors, particularly if the Yankees want to keep developing him as a starter. While Gil's repertoire is pretty shallow -- he'll flash a decent changeup but it is rarely used -- the biggest swing skill for him will be his command, as his fastball and slider are good enough pitches to turn a lineup over twice if he's locating them. He's had a walk rate north of 14 percent during four of his six assignments since 2021, and the hope is that his control will be passable as he gets further removed from surgery. If he does get moved to the bullpen, Gil has the stuff to pitch in high-leverage situations.
Gil's elbow gave out during a start last May at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and he wound up needing Tommy John surgery. His recovery has gone as anticipated but we're unlikely to see him as an option for the Yankees until at least the second half. Gil was arguably the most electric young arm the Yanks had prior to surgery, but he's had trouble taking the ball every fifth day and also throwing strikes. He probably won't have any fantasy value in 2023, but there's still plenty of time for him to turn into something.
Gil stands out for his monster fastball and his swagger on the mound. The ease with which he gets to upper-90s velocity with excellent spin is rare, and the heater projects as at least a plus pitch long term. His fastball enables his mid-80s slider to play up -- he can land the breaker for strikes or get hitters to chase out of the zone. Gil had above-average vertical movement on his fastball and above-average horizontal movement on his slider, with each pitch generating whiffs at an above-average clip. He will need to improve his seldom-used changeup and his control in order to start long term, but considering he doesn't turn 24 until June and has already had some success in the majors, Gil's development is ahead of schedule. From a size, stuff and command standpoint, there are some similarities to Dylan Cease, so patience is recommended in dynasty leagues. The Yankees probably won't want to go into the season relying on him to be a regular member of the rotation, but if he can show some improvement with the changeup or the control, there will inevitably be opportunities for him to start again this season.
Gil might have the best fastball in the minors, but as things stand, he is most likely to end up as a reliever long term. A 6-foot-3, 176-pound Dominican righty the Yankees acquired from the Twins straight up for Jake Cave in 2017, Gil only really needed his upper-90s fastball to dominate Low-A hitters. The pitch has elite velocity and remarkable late life, but perhaps most impressive is the fact he has a low-effort delivery for someone who regularly touches triple digits. Once he got to High-A, his shaky command and inconsistent offspeed pitches led to some of the shine coming off. He missed the final month of the season with biceps tightness, but was added to the 40-man roster this offseason. His real-life upside is high in the rotation or the bullpen, but he'd need to improve his secondary offerings and his command for us to get really excited about his fantasy prospects.
