                2025 Fantasy Outlook

He technically missed Week 18 with a knee injury, but 2024 was still the healthiest season of Conner's career, following seven straight years with multiple missed games. Good health led him to career highs of 283 touches and 1,508 yards from scrimmage, along with his fourth consecutive season of eight-plus touchdowns. Unfortunately, this is more likely a red flag for future regression than it is the sign of a new day, because Conner's ruthlessly physical running style places a high toll on both tacklers and himself. This can make Conner slightly challenging as a fantasy asset, because flickering availability undermines his otherwise superb per-snap production. A player like that is at risk of ending up on your bench during his productive games, and in your lineup for the ones he leaves early. Still, all indications are that Arizona views Conner as a workhorse running back despite the 2024 third-round selection of Trey Benson, so if Conner stays relatively healthy again he'll likely prove a steal at his ADP (again). Benson's speed could prove increasingly tempting to Arizona coaches if his fundamentals improve from last year, and with Conner turning 30 in May it wouldn't be shocking if significant athletic decline set in without prior notice. Until then, Conner should offer strong per-play production both as a runner and receiver. Read Past Outlooks

            Officially sent to injured reserve
The Cardinals placed Conner (foot) on injured reserve Tuesday.
				ANALYSIS
It's merely a procedural move, as Conner has already been ruled out for the season after he was injured in Sunday's loss to the 49ers. Conner's season is cut short after rushing 32 times for 95 yards and one touchdown. He added eight catches for 38 yards and an additional score as a receiver. With Conner done for the year, the Cardinals are set to roll with Trey Benson as their No. 1 RB, with Emari Demercado as depth in the backfield.

This Week's Opposing Pass Defense

How does the Cowboys pass defense compare to other NFL teams this season?

The bars represents the team's percentile rank (based on QB Rating Against). The longer the bar, the better their pass defense is. The team and position group ratings only include players that are currently on the roster and not on injured reserve. The list of players in the table only includes defenders with at least 3 attempts against them.

How do James Conner's measurables compare to other running backs?

This section compares his draft workout metrics with players at the same position. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that metric and it would be considered average.

The Cardinals offense hasn't made it easy for Conner the last three years, with dysfunctional blocking and poor passing making it easy for defenses to lock onto the running back. Undeterred, Conner has thrived in Arizona throughout it all, including his first 1,000-yard rushing season in 2023 despite missing four games (while averaging 5.0 yards per carry). In 41 games with the Cardinals, he's scored 36 touchdowns and caught 84.6 percent of his targets, making him one of the few power backs in the league that also excels on passing downs. The one fair question with Conner and his fantasy utility is the question of durability. He suffers injuries more often than most running backs, which makes sense given that his running style entails constant high-impact collisions as he grinds his way through defenses. Conner has missed multiple games in each of his seven pro seasons, though never more than six in any one year. He's often provided RB1 utility when healthy, including last season, averaging at least 15.7 touches and 71.5 total yards per game six years running. The Cardinals may also use third-round pick Trey Benson and 2023 UDFA Emari Demercado in an effort to keep their veteran starter healthy, but Conner still figures to be the clear starter and lead guy for what should be an improved Arizona offense.

    Season-ending injury feared
The ankle injury Conner suffered in Sunday's Week 3 loss to the 49ers is of the season-ending variety, Josh Weinfuss and Adam Schefter of ESPN report.
				ANALYSIS
Conner was bent back awkwardly on a tackle following a nine-yard run early in the third quarter and had to be carted off. Weinfuss relays via Schefter that Conner's injury is considered "severe" and will require surgery. Trey Benson, who rushed 10 times for 42 yards and brought in three of four targets for nine yards during the one-point loss, is slated to operate as Arizona's No. 1 back moving forward, beginning with Thursday night's divisional clash against the Seahawks.
