Secures three-year contract
Schmidt signed a three-year, $10.5 million deal with Utah on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt will bring championship pedigree to Utah, having won the Stanley Cup with the Panthers this past season. During the regular season, the 33-year-old blueliner notched 19 points in 80 games, including four power-play points. While Schmidt has reached the 30-point threshold multiple times in his career, he hasn't even managed 20 in each of his last three seasons, so fantasy players probably shouldn't be expecting an offensive explosion with the Mammoth.

Schmidt finished his third and final season in Winnipeg with arguably his least productive year to date. He appeared in 62 regular-season games, managing two goals and 14 points. The Jets elected to buy out the remaining year of his contract, allowing Schmidt to sign a one-year, $800K contract with the Panthers in free agency. It seems like an ideal landing spot for both team and player. Schmidt is likely to serve in a third-pairing role for his new team while seeing time on the second power-play unit, making him a name to monitor in deeper formats.

Hitting open market
Schmidt is expected to reach the open market Tuesday, Pierre LeBrun of TSN reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt played in all 24 playoff games for the Panthers on their way to lifting Lord Stanley's Cup, generating three goals and nine assists while dishing out 36 hits and 20 blocks. Despite his crucial role, the team prioritized the likes of Aaron Ekblad, Sam Bennett and Brad Marchand, leaving it with precious little cap space to bring back Schmidt.
