2025 Fantasy Outlook
When healthy during the 2024 season, Fairbanks racked up 23 of Tampa Bay's 33 saves for a 70 percent team save share that would have been a top-10 mark among closers. However, the right-hander expectedly missed time, requiring two trips to the injured list -- one for a nerve issue in his throwing arm and the other a season-ending lat strain in August. Unfortunately, Fairbanks' stability as the Rays closer remains capped due to persistent injury risk. He's missed an average of 65 games per season since 2021. In addition, he's a trade candidate due to his contract status. Fairbanks makes a reasonable $3.67 million in 2025, but has a $7 million team option in 2026 (or $1 million buyout) before he becomes a free-agent, thus making him a back-end CL2 option for 2025 drafts. No stranger to the injury bug, Fairbanks hit the IL twice (forearm inflammation, hip inflammation) during the first half of 2023. However, once he returned in mid-June, he surprisingly stayed healthy for the rest of the season, establishing career-best marks in games played (49), innings (45.1) and strikeouts (68). He also converted a career-high 25 saves, as Rays manager Kevin Cash altered his late-inning approach. Quite simply, when Fairbanks was healthy, he was the Rays primary closer. The role was well deserved too, as the 29-year-old closed out 2023 in dominant fashion. He struck out 51 batters in 28 innings after the All-Star break and finished the year with a 2.58 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. He did so throwing more sliders (49.9% pitch usage) than ever, as he used to lean on his upper-90's 4-seamer as his primary offering. Fairbanks remains a solid mid-tier closer as long as you plan for some likely time missed due to injury.

Fairbanks has been a popular name in trade talks ahead of the Winter Meetings, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Fairbanks had a down year by his standards in 2024, posting a 3.57 ERA in 45.1 innings, but that hasn't stopped teams around the league from checking in on the right-hander. He's collected 48 total saves over his last two seasons with Tampa Bay and could draw a high asking price in trade conversations.
