The Mariners optioned Lao to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday.

Lao allowed one unearned run with a 3:0 K:BB over a 1.2-inning relief appearance during his major-league debut Tuesday against the Red Sox. He's being replaced by a fresh bullpen arm, with Casey Lawrence absorbing his spot on the roster.
