2025 Fantasy Outlook
Javier Baez has generally been a disaster at shortstop for the Tigers, which has opened the door for Sweeney. The 24-year-old was shipped to Detroit in July as part of the Jack Flaherty trade, and Sweeney made his MLB debut not long after that. Baez ended up shutting down his season early due to a hip issue and subsequent surgery, which paved the way for Sweeney to see fairly regular playing time down the stretch. The rookie endured some struggles, as he batted just .218 with a .642 OPS across 36 games. Sweeney did manage four home runs in that limited action, and the former first-round pick likely has 20-homer upside as he continues to develop at the MLB level. Heading into 2025, the Detroit front office has said Baez should be healthy and will have a role with the club. It remains to be seen if that's as the everyday starter at short, but with the Tigers embracing a youth movement and finding success in 2024, Sweeney has a good shot to supplant the veteran. There will likely be some more growing pains, but Sweeney is worth keeping an eye on as an upside play in fantasy leagues, particularly if he snags a regular role in the early going. Could see more time at short
Sweeney will start at shortstop and bat eighth Monday against the Padres, and he could see more time at the position with Javier Baez set to serve as the team's primary center fielder for the time being, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Sweeney was already seeing plenty of time at short, though he was getting some days off against lefties, with Baez picking up starts at his natural position of shortstop. However, with Baez set to focus more on center field, at least until the likes of Parker Meadows (shoulder) and Wenceel Perez (back) are able to return, Sweeney may have to cover short more frequently in the near term, including in matchups against southpaws. He'll face San Diego righty starter Randy Vasquez on Monday.

2022 Fantasy Outlook
It's not clear where Sweeney will end up defensively, but his bat has a chance to profile anywhere. He hit .382 with 14 home runs, 24 strikeouts and 46 walks in 48 games as a junior at Eastern Illinois. The Yankees continued a recent trend of targeting bat-first lefty-hitting collegians by selecting him with the 20th-overall pick in the 2021 draft. Sweeney wasn't playing against great competition in the Ohio Valley Conference, but in a draft that was light on impactful college hitters, he stood out for his offensive upside. It's not the most picturesque left-handed swing -- he has a big leg kick and it's more rigid than smooth -- but there's controlled violence, which coupled with his strike zone awareness, could result in his OBP and SLG carrying the day. He lived up to that billing in his pro debut, hitting .245/.357/.518 with six home runs and three steals in 29 games at Low-A. Sweeney's 22.5 K% was a little high, given his age (21) and level, but his 14.0 BB% was where it needed to be. He played shortstop in his pro debut, but third base, second base and left field are potential landing spots on the defensive spectrum.
