2025 Fantasy Outlook
The Rockies selected Schunk in the second round of the 2019 first-year player draft (No. 62 overall). After spending all 2023 with Triple-A Alburquerque, Schunk returned to the Isotopes last season before getting his big-league callup in late June. He played sparingly, filling in at second and third base with a taste of shortstop. Schunk appeared overmatched, recording a 31.6 percent strikeout rate and 4.1 percent walk rate. His batted ball metrics were poor. Schunk's .291/.346/.464 line in 185 Triple-A games may seem encouraging, but he played in one of the most hitter-friendly venues in the best league for offense. Contract selected by Colorado
The Rockies selected Schunk's contract from Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Schunk will take the spot on the 26-man roster vacated by Ezequiel Tovar (hip), who was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. Schunk opted to stay with the Rockies in the minors after being DFA'd in mid-February, and in Triple-A he is slashing .283/.353/.435 with one stolen base, one home run and 10 RBI in 52 plate appearances. Schunk could see some starts in the infield with Tovar, Tyler Freeman (oblique) and Thairo Estrada (wrist) all on the IL.

Schunk was the top Rockies hitting prospect at the alternate training site and in the fall instructional league. He is well built at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, and while he is hit over power now, his power is trending up. Schunk controls the strike zone, makes contact at a high clip and drives the ball to all fields. His bat speed reportedly improved this past season, which combined with his size and contact skill, gives him a chance to hit for 25-homer pop. A third baseman by trade (he was a two-way player in college), Schunk is now capable of handling the keystone as well, which gives him another avenue to break through with the big-league club when he is ready in a year or two. It doesn't really matter for fantasy, but it's worth noting that he got rave reviews for his leadership in addition to what he was doing at the plate and in the field.

He's also not on the 40-man roster, so the Rockies would need to free up some space in order to bring him up. Still, he's hitting well in the highest level of the minors, and that could be enough to get him a shot before the end of 2024 given Colorado is competing for the worst record in the NL.
