Poteet has spent part of each of the past three seasons in the majors, with last year's 24.1 inning stint with the Yankees being better than his previous visits with the Marlins. That said, his ERA estimators were more than double his actual 2.22 mark, so be wary of a mid-career breakout. The Cubs must have seen something as they acquired Poteet as part of the Cody Bellinger salary dump. The 30-year-old right-hander is best suited to work as a swingman, unless he can figure out how to reverse his trend of a falling strikeout rate. At best, Poteet is a pitch and ditch candidate for a spot start with the wind blowing in at Wrigley Field. Yeah, not exactly a glowing endorsement. Read Past Outlooks

The Orioles placed Poteet on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with right shoulder inflammation.

Poteet was rocked for five runs while throwing 68 pitches over 2.2 innings in Sunday's blowout loss to the Reds and apparently came out of the appearance with a shoulder problem. It's not clear how long he might be sidelined.

Poteet had Tommy John surgery in August 2022 after logging a 3.86 ERA in 12 appearances (two starts) for the Marlins that year. He made seven starts for Miami the prior year as a rookie and struggled to a 4.99 ERA. The 29-year-old righty was released by the Royals in December and signed a one-year, $750,000 deal with the Yankees in January. He didn't make the rotation out of camp, but Poteet made a spot start April 13 and then joined the rotation in June following Clarke Schmidt's shoulder injury. The Yankees have some decent pitching prospects in the upper levels of the minors, but Poteet represents a steadier hand. He throws a 93-94 mph fastball over half the time while mixing in two breaking balls and a changeup. Poteet's top trait, now that he is 22 months removed from surgery, is his ability to fill up the zone, as he has a strong 8.1 percent walk rate at Triple-A and a stingy 2.4 percent walk rate through two MLB starts.
