Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Rea was a major rotation piece for the Brewers over the past two seasons, but the organization elected to turn down his $5.5 million club option for 2025 after he posted a 4.29 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 135:43 K:BB over 167.2 innings. He served up 52 home runs in 58 outings across the last two years and also had a 4.82 FIP during that span. Rea cleared waivers prior to Milwaukee turning down the option, so there's limited interest league-wide even at a modest salary. The 34-year-old may not get consistent starts again in 2025, but he should be able to secure a contract this winter, even if it's a minor-league pact. Read Past Outlooks

Logs three-inning save
Rea earned a save against the Athletics on Monday, pitching three scoreless innings during which he gave up four hits and struck out one batter.
ANALYSIS
Rea had a 16-3 cushion when he entered in the seventh inning, so he didn't experience much pressure. Still, the veteran righty looked good on the mound, yielding just four singles over four scoreless frames. Rea lost out to Monday's starter Ben Brown for a season-opening spot in Chicago's rotation, and he doesn't figure to see many more save chances since he'll likely work mostly in middle and long relief.

2021
2018
2017
2016
Rea hadn't seen significant action in the majors since making 19 starts in 2016, but he caught on with the Brewers last year and was a serviceable swingman with a 4.55 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 110:38 K:BB over 124.2 innings. He started in 22 of his 26 appearances and had decent strikeout and walk rates (21.3 percent and 7.4 percent, respectively) but was hurt by the long ball (1.7 HR/9). Milwaukee opted to re-sign him early in the offseason, and he's likely to be a factor in the starting rotation again in 2024. Rea might not be a reliable fantasy starter but should be a solid streaming option, assuming he's able to replicate his performance, which a 4.39 xERA and 4.30 xFIP indicate is realistic.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

League unimpressed by arsenal
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Rea likely went unclaimed on waivers due to his Stuff+ of 84, which ranked 55th of 58 qualified starters during the 2024 regular season.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander delivered results just below league average the past two seasons for the Brewers with a 4.40 ERA across 292.1 innings, and the organization declined his $5 million club option for 2025 after he passed through waivers. Rea was Milwaukee's most reliable starter at times in 2024 but faded down the stretch, and his non-dominant arsenal leads to a limited ceiling.
