Hernandez spent the first two months in the Marlins rotation. He was sporting a 6.75 ERA and 1.44 WHIP when he was demoted to Triple-A Jacksonville in early June. Hernandez was recalled in early July to pitch as a reliever. He had another stint with the Jumbo Shrimp in August but finished the campaign in the Marlins bullpen. Homers have always been an issue for the righty, but last season was extreme with 19 surrendered in only 62.1 frames. Combined with fewer strikeouts and more walks and it's understandable why Hernandez finished with a 6.35 ERA, the eighth worst among hurlers collecting at least 50 innings. The Mets must still see something they like since they traded for Hernandez in the offseason to serve as a depth piece. Citi Field, like Marlins Stadium, is a good place to pitch, but Hernandez needs to show he can keep the ball in the yard before getting an invite to the fantasy party.
Hernandez may not not have the upside that others on the Miami staff do, but what he lacks in stuff he makes up for in command when he can stay healthy. Hernandez was progressing nicely in 2020 before injuries ended his season and the same thing happened last year with both a biceps injury as well as a severe quad strain limiting him to 51.2 innings. He has never been able to stay on the mound for any length of time, and one wonders if his future is in the bullpen given the massive splits in his history. Hernandez has a 20.8 K-BB% with a 1.09 WHIP against righties but a 9.4 K-BB% and a 1.50 WHIP against lefties for his career. The lack of an effective changeup is mostly to blame and he cannot turn a lineup over a third time without one. He was attempting to use his changeup more last year, doubling its usage from 2020 before his injury.
Considering Hernandez only started six games, averaging about 4.1 frames per outing, the best way to describe his numbers is "encouraging." Hernandez recorded a 32.1 K% and 4.7 BB%. The resulting 27.4 K-BB% would have been fourth best if he worked enough innings to qualify. The uptick in strikeout rate was supported by more swinging strikes. Hernandez's season was cut short by a sore right lat, although he's on target to be ready in the spring. He continued to struggle with homers, surrendering five for a bloated 1.75 HR/9. Considering Marlins Park is one of the best pitching venues in the league, it's no surprise Hernandez fared better at home. He's earmarked for a spot in the Miami rotation and thus is an ideal candidate to use as a streamer for home games, or maybe more if last year's improvements prove genuine.
Hernandez has pitched to a 5.11 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in nearly 150 innings at the major-league level. Last season saw some positive steps -- his 16.7 K-BB% should not be overlooked -- though the stuff that happened in between the strikeouts and walks is tough to overlook. He allowed 20 home runs in 82.1 innings of work, and lefties teed off on him to the tune of a .260/.341/.568 line last season. Nine of his 20 homers were hit by righties, but he held them to a .226/.296/.446 line overall. His flyball tendencies are better suited in Miami (4.26 ERA) than on the road (5.92 ERA). The issue with Hernandez is command of his pitches; when he misses, the batters do not. When he commands his stuff well, he can be successful. Right now home starts with righty-heavy lineups are his sweet spot.

Hernandez projects to slot into the Mets' arsenal of starters as opposed to the actively shuffling bullpen, shares Anthony DiComo of MLB.com
ANALYSIS
Hernandez is coming off an ugly 2022 season, logging a 5.98 ERA as a starter and a 7.47 ERA out of the bullpen. His 4.81 expected ERA was more palatable, but he relinquished 19 home runs as well. Mets manager Buck Showalter sees him as a starter, but he'll need to prove some reliability.
