Grimsley has been suspended for 50 games by Major League Baseball, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The suspension will begin if Grimsley is ever on a team's 40-man roster, which at this point seems to be an event that will never happen. Grimsley has likely played in his last major league game (he's indicated through his agent that he plans to retire after he was released by Arizona last week), but the potential marks he leaves on baseball have nothing to do with anything he ever did on the field.

Grimsley came back early from Tommy John surgery in 2005 with limited results as he had a poor 5.73 ERA and 10/9 K/BB ratio in 22 innings with the Orioles. If he can stay healthy, he'll secure a few holds in a middle-relief role with the Diamondbacks in 2006.
The Orioles thought they were shoring up their bullpen midseason when they acquired Grimsley from Kansas City to be their primary right-handed set-up man. He was largely inconsistent however, blowing six saves, and after undergoing Tommy John surgery in October, will likely miss the entire 2005 campaign.
Before the All-Star game, Grimsley pitched in 49 games and had a 4.14 ERA. After that, he was throwing gas on fire, posting a 9.82 ERA in September. Whether it was the workload or Grimsley's advancing age as the cause of the decline will be answered this season.
Early in his career, Grimsley was a starter without much control, a problem that knocked him out of the majors for two years. He came back with the Yankees in 1999 and has improved every year since. He allowed only four home runs in 71 innings in 2002. He's 35-years old and probably too expensive for the Royals to keep.

Grimsley has turned state's evidence after failing a drug test in 2003 and subsequently admitting to using illegal performance-enhancing drugs, the East Valley Tribune reports. Grimsley's Scottsdale, Arizona home was searched by 13 IRS agents for over six hours on Tuesday in an attempt to find records or info potentially implicating other athletes, coaches or trainers.
