2025 Fantasy Outlook
Wicks flashed some potential as a rookie in 2023 but wasn't able to take a clear step forward last season. An oblique strain slowed him down and limited the lefty to just 11 appearances (10 starts). Wicks ended up posting a 5.48 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 42 strikeouts across 46 innings. The 25-year-old was a first-round pick back in 2021, so the Cubs figure to practice patience and hope Wicks can develop. The southpaw doesn't have overpowering stuff, and his career 7.36 K/9 backs that up. Hicks is at his best when he's using his effective changeup to keep hitters off balance, then mixing in a fastball with some movement. He's yet to really show off those skills over an extended stretch of time in the rotation but may get that opportunity in 2025. The Cubs have Justin Steele, Shota Imanaga and Jameson Taillon all locked into starting spots, and Javier Assad figures to be in the rotation as well. However, veteran Kyle Hendricks is a free agent, and Chicago may decide to move on and give that spot to Wicks. There is plenty of risk baked in, but Wicks could emerge as a useful fantasy player if he begins to settle into a starting role. Read Past Outlooks

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Wicks made his MLB debut in 2023 and flashed some promise. The 2021 first round pick made a total of seven starts, compiling a 4.41 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 24 strikeouts across 34.2 innings. He actually had a 3.00 ERA and 1.12 WHIP through his first six starts, but he was tagged for six runs over only 1.2 innings in his final outing of the year. It's not surprising to see young pitchers endure some up and downs, so all in all, it was a promising first taste of the majors. The righty did allow 11 walks in his 34.2 innings, and he issued another 13 free passes in 33 innings with Triple-A Iowa, so he'll need to improve in that area if he wants to take a step forward. Entering his age-24 season, Wicks should have the inside track on a rotation spot to begin the year, likely slotting in behind Justin Steele, Jameson Taillon and Kyle Hendricks. Wicks has the talent and pedigree to be a solid MLB starter, and while fantasy managers may want to wait a bit until he gets rolling, he could find himself on the radar in short order.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Could make MLB debut this weekend
Wicks could potentially make his big-league debut Sunday in Pittsburgh after Drew Smyly was moved back to the bullpen, per Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network.
ANALYSIS
Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer declined to comment when asked about Wicks potentially claiming the open rotation spot, but the young left-hander is the obvious candidate after being scratched from his latest start at Triple-A Iowa for non-injury reasons. The 23-year-old has a 3.82 ERA over 33 innings for Iowa since being promoted from Double-A Tennessee in late June.
