Lasts four innings in start
Sauer allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two over four innings in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Sauer was fine in his first big-league start, but he didn't pitch long enough to qualify for the win in a 19-2 blowout. He gave up a run in each of the first two innings before settling in. Over 15.2 innings this season, Sauer has a 2.30 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB. He's got some starting experience in the minors, but he's been utilized as a middle reliever for the bulk of his time in the majors. Clayton Kershaw (toe) is poised to make his season debut this weekend, with Landon Knack a likelier bet to stick in the rotation than Sauer.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Sauer had been tracking like a swing man, No. 5 starter or long reliever with the Yankees, but since they already have an abundance of prospects who fit that mold, he was left unprotected from the Rule 5 draft. The Royals swooped in and snagged Sauer for now, and if they like what they see in spring training, he should be able to handle a low-leverage long-relief role this year. Sauer, who turned 25 in January, is a 6-foot-4 righty with a decent fastball and shaky command. He most recently posted a 3.42 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 83 strikeouts in 68.1 innings as an old-for-the-level Double-A starter.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Joins taxi squad
Sauer joined the Dodgers in Miami ahead of Wednesday's game, reports Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on April 30, so a player would need to be moved to the injured list in order for him to return to the majors so quickly. It remains to be seen if Sauer is added back to the big-league roster or if he sticks on the taxi squad as a potential injury replacement.
