2024 Fantasy Outlook
The 2023 campaign was Maton's best season to date as the right-hander posted an impressive 3.00 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 74:25 K:BB over 66 innings with Houston. His standout season earned him a nice raise, as the veteran reliever signed a one-year, $6.25 million deal with Tampa Bay. While Maton is unlikely to see many save chances with the Rays, his impressive strikeout rate should keep him in their high-leverage mix. Maton doesn't throw hard - his fastball averages just 89 mph - but his curveball has been outstanding and even became his primary offering (40.4 percent pitch usage in 2023). The 30-year-old can be prone to the long ball (1.1 HR/9 for his career), but Maton is talented enough to draw consideration as a late round pick in AL-only and 50-round draft-and-hold formats. Picks up save Monday
Maton earned a save against the Red Sox on Monday, striking out two batters in a perfect ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Primary closer Edwin Diaz had pitched four times in five days coming into Monday, so he was held out with the Mets ahead by three runs entering the top of the ninth. Maton filled Diaz's usual role well, fanning two batters and retiring the side in order on 12 pitches. This was Maton's first save as a member of the Mets, but he's been very good in a high-leverage role since moving to New York from Tampa Bay on July 9, racking up eight holds and posting a 1.77 ERA along with a 22:5 K:BB over 20.1 frames.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2019
2018
Cleveland acquired Maton's services from San Diego in July of 2019 in exchange for international bonus pool allotments. His 2020 season appears underwhelming at a glance, but below the surface Maton looks like a potential stud reliever in the making. The right-hander struck out exactly one-third of the 96 batters he faced, with his four-seamer, cutter and curveball all registering whiff rates north of 32%, per Statcast. While they should not be taken as gospel, the estimators all agree Maton deserved an ERA of 3.00 or lower. His velocity is not overpowering, but regardless Maton gets enough strikeouts to profile as a late-inning arm for Cleveland. James Karinchak looks like a shoo-in at closer. If that does not work out for whatever reason, Maton may even be considered for the ninth.

Yankees in mix
The Yankees have had discussions with Maton's representation, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Maton is one of a handful of relievers the Yankees are connected to, but Heyman says that, to this point, the team is making "low offers." The 30-year-old Maton should be able to net a multi-year contract this winter after posting a 3.42 ERA and 147:49 K:BB over 131.2 frames across the last two seasons with the Astros.
