ANALYSIS
Martinez missed the start of last season recovering from sports hernia surgery, then began the year at Triple-A. He was called up in May and saw some action with Jose Reyes and Alex Cora out before dislocating his pinkie, which required surgery. Martinez will likely be signed to a minor-league contract and be a spring training invite somewhere.

Martinez spent most of 2008 in the minors in Los Angeles and New York, before getting a September callup with the Mets. He is a free agent, who is an organizational depth/utility man type, so don't hold your breath waiting for Martinez to get a new gig this winter.

The Dodgers declined Martinez's 2008 option in October, thus making him a free agent. Considering his age (35) and dramatic drop-off in performance (.194/.248/.225 in 129 at-bats), his career may be over. At best, he can hope for a non-roster invitation to spring training in the hopes that some team will be desperate for a utilityman.

After Martinez did a solid job filling in for the injured Jeff Kent and coming up with a few key hits, he was rewarded with a one-year contract for 2007. Martinez is a nice guy to have on a club's bench, but he shouldn't be anywhere near your fantasy team.

The veteran backup infielder was dealt from Detroit to Philadelphia and didn't hit much along the way. Younger, faster legs are quickly making him obsolete.

Martinez is a journeyman middle infielder without much speed or power. He'll assume his usual utility role in Detroit this year.

Martinez went .283/.333./.375 last season which is about par for the course for the ulilityman. He'll play second base, shortstop and third, but he doesn't hit for power or run much.

Martinez may have had his career year in 2000, when he hit .302 in 88 games; his last two seasons, extrapolated to one year of full-time play, look something like .259-7-48 with an OPS of .710. When he's older, he might wonder how different his career may have been if hadn't been stuck behind Jeff Kent on the depth chart for so long.
