Rest-of-Season Projections
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Adams was one of the most productive backup catchers in baseball last season, slashing an impressive .273/.331/.476 with four home runs across 158 plate appearances. A huge chunk of that production came against left-handed pitching, with Adams sporting a .960 OPS with three of his four long balls versus southpaws. Adams made more than twice as many starts against lefties than he did against righties and it could be a similar setup in 2024, with Keibert Ruiz seeing some action at designated hitter those days. It's a role that could make him valuable again to the Nationals but one which probably won't lead to usefulness in fantasy leagues. Read Past Outlooks

Losing work to Ruiz
Adams will start at catcher and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Though he'll step in behind the plate for the series finale, Adams playing time has predictably been on the downturn since Keibert Ruiz made his return from the injured list earlier this month. Adams will be making just his second start in seven games.

Returning to Nationals' roster
Adams will replace Tres Barrera as the Nationals' backup catcher until September, per Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post.
ANALYSIS
Across 2022, Adams has struggled to a .224 average at Triple-A and just a .192 average across 78 MLB at-bats. Additionally, Keibert Ruiz has performed capably as the starter and is just 24 years old. Improved production from Adams down the stretch could be necessary for him to carve out an MLB future.

2023
2022
A third-round pick by Toronto in 2017, Adams was flipped to Washington in 2021 in exchange for lefty reliever Brad Hand. While Adams made the Opening Day roster for the Nationals, he was sent down for close to two months in the middle of the season and ended up totaling 155 plate appearances as getting Keibert Ruiz playing time was understandably the higher priority for the organization. Adams strikes out too much, but he can light up the radar gun with impressive exit velocity when he runs into one. He projects to open the year as the clear-cut No. 2 behind Ruiz.

Could still see consistent work
Adams might still see regular playing time even with Keibert Ruiz back from the injured list, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports. "We're definitely going to use him," Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Thursday. "One, let him catch. And two, we can also DH Keibert like we've done in the past and let him continue to catch. He's done a great job. He's learned a lot over the years. He's really coming into his own."
