Urbina, who was released from prison in Venezuela this past week, hopes to play professional baseball in the United States again, the Associated Press reports.

ANALYSIS
Urbina served 7 1/2 years of a 14 year sentence for attempted murder of five workers on his family's ranch in his native Venezuela. The 38-year-old has joined the Caracas Lions of the Venezuelan Winter League to showcase his stuff. Urbina last pitched in the majors in 2005 with the Phillies. He'll have to settle for a minor league deal if any clubs are interested in giving him a shot this spring.

Urbina has had a tumultuous last 18 months. His mother was kidnapped back home in Venezuela late in 2004 and was rescued in February 2005. He lost the closer's role in Detroit and was traded to Philadelphia. He pitched well on the whole, punching out 97 batters in almost 80 innings. Then he was arrested in November 2005 on attempted murder charges after he and some others allegedly attacked some workers at his family's ranch in Venezuela. The Phillies opted not to offer him arbitration and his major league and legal future are up in the air.

The Tigers signed Troy Percival despite having an established closer in Urbina, who left the team last September when his mother was kidnapped in his native Venezuela. Urbina would only return if his mother's status is resolved, and even if he did, Detroit is moving forward with Percival as its closer. Barring a trade, he's unlikely to close and his value was mainly in saves, not ratios, in 2004. He's a late-round flier unless his playing status clears up.

The Marlins made a huge statement with their July trade for Triple-U, but Urbina himself made a big statement by being basically unhittable for Florida. He'll be somebody's closer once again in 2004, and past the gold-standard stoppers like Mariano Rivera and Keith Foulke, Urbina could be as good as anybody.

Didn't pitch too poorly, but the blown saves he did suffer were spectacularly blown. His home run rate is a little too high for comfort. The Rangers signed Urbina in the offseason to a one-year deal. He'll be the closer for Texas.
