Fant will start for Mississippi State in its opener against Oregon on Saturday, the Associated Press reports.

Fant has looked strong so far in training camp and is leading in the QB race with Kyle York. "I'm not saying Kevin's beaten Kyle out yet, but I'm saying he's jumped out," Bulldogs offensive coordinator Morris Watts told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger. "He's having fun, running around patting guys on the back. Kevin's got a smile on his face all the time. He's got the charisma you'd like to see from the quarterback position."

Fant completed 7 of 17 passes for 97 yards and one touchdown, but he also took three sacks and had to leave the game with 10 minutes left in the third quarter after a hard hit by Mondre Dickerson forced him to fumble, allowing Tennessee's Rashad Moore to pick up the ball and run nine yards for a touchdown, The Sports Xchange reports.

Instead of taking a knee of the final play against Troy State, Fant ran a quarterback draw and ended up with a sprained ankle that will follow him into Saturday's game at Memphis.

Fant returned after serving a one-game suspension to pass for 336 yards and three touchdowns as the Bulldogs beat Division I-AA Jacksonville State 51-13 on Saturday, The Sports Xchange reports.
