Rice officially announced his retirement Monday morning, DenverBroncos.com reports.

ANALYSIS
"I said I wouldn't do this," Rice said, dabbing tears from his eyes as he spoke at a Denver press conference. "I think the tears that you see (are because) I've really enjoyed this ride. It's been great." Arguably the NFL's all-time best wide receiver to play the game, Rice's next stop will be induction to the Hall of Fame. We thank Rice, who who owns a total of 38 NFL records, including 1,549 career receptions, 22,895 career receiving yards, 197 receiving touchdowns and 208 total touchdowns, for the wonderful memories and wish him the very best.

Rice is assured a spot in the Hall of Fame, but not a roster spot for the Broncos. He's fighting to make the final roster and his best days are behind him. Should Rice survive final cuts in late August, he'll likely compete for playing time as the team's No. 4 wide receiver making his immediate fantasy value minimal.

Rice will turn 42 in October and is also coming off a bad year where he produced 63 receptions for 863 yards and two touchdowns. His first touchdown didn’t come until Week 12 against Kansas City. Like teammate Tim Brown, Rice couldn’t get separation from opposing cornerbacks and the Raiders had absolutely no vertical game. If you must absolutely choose between Rice or Brown, we’d take Rice but don't overpay.

While he hasn't been a dominant player in some time, it's nonetheless astounding that Rice is still a difference-maker into his 40s. While Rice's upside is probably shot for good, there's no reason why he can't crank out another 1,200 yards and 7 or 8 touchdowns. He still maintains a passionate workout routine, to some degree his instincts and experience make up for the step or two he's lost, and he's got a heady veteran quarterback (Rich Gannon) getting him the ball. Rice probably has at least one more productive year in him.
