Akiyama lost to Alberto Mina via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night 79 on Saturday in Seoul, South Korea.

It's hard to imagine how the judges came up with this scorecard. Akiyama spent the third round ragdolling his winded opponent -- initiating all of the action in what easily could have been a 10-8 round. Nevertheless, strong showings from Mina in rounds 1 and 2 (including a near finish at the end of round 2) resulted in a tough split decision loss for Akiyama. Realistically, Akiyama doesn't have a chance of competing against much of the welterweight division. He continues to be a fan favorite and huge draw when the UFC visits Japan and South Korea, which means he'll likely stay on the roster just for those occasions.
