Gets contract despite decision
Grad defeated Michael Aswell via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 30-27) at Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series. After the show, he was one of four fighters to be awarded an official UFC contract.
ANALYSIS
Rarely are contracts awarded without a finish, but this was an action-packed fight from beginning to end, and the close result was expected given this fight went off as essentially a pick'em. White even said afterwards that Aswell would be on his short list for a late-notice replacement fight should the need arise. Grad actually lost the battle of significant strikes in all three rounds, finishing with 102 total compared to 155 from Aswell. His wrestling helped prove his case, as the Austrian fighter recorded a takedown in all three rounds (though he accumulated just 1:32 of control time). Grad also did the more noticeable damage, leaving Aswell with a gruesome cut that dominated the social media chatter Tuesday. Grad came up short on last season of the Contender Series, but now the 28-year-old is the latest addition to the UFC's featherweight division, entering with a pro record of 14-2-0.
