Rattler had first-round hype early in his college career, but he never matched the promise of a 28-TD season for Oklahoma in 2020, and ultimately landed in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He made six starts as a rookie, losing all six games while averaging just 5.8 YPA and throwing more interceptions (five) than touchdowns (four). Rattler was in a terrible situation, playing behind a supbar offensive line and without the Saints' top two receivers, but it's nonetheless difficult to draw positives from such a brutally bad stat line. He may get another shot to compere for the starting job anyway, as the Saints otherwise are left with 2025 second-round pick Tyler Shough and 2023 fourth-rounder Jake Haener after Derek Carr announced his retirement in May. Could battle for QB1 role
As a result of Derek Carr (shoulder) announcing his retirement from the NFL on Saturday, Rattler could battle with rookie Tyler Shough for the Saints' starting quarterback role to begin the 2025 campaign.

Carr's retirement leaves New Orleans with a QB room consisting of Rattler, Shough and Jake Haener. In terms of game experience, Rattler is the most experienced of the trio -- he got into seven games as a rookie last year but largely struggled, completing just 57 percent of his 228 pass attempts for 1,317 yards and a 4:5 TD:INT while adding 146 yards on the ground on 18 carries. However, Shough -- who is a rookie but is exactly one year older than Rattler -- may be the favorite for the QB1 role heading into training camp after the Saints took him in the second round of April's NFL Draft. As it currently stands, both QBs should have an opportunity to make a case for the Week 1 starting role throughout camp and preseason play, though there's an outside chance New Orleans could bring in a more seasoned QB via free agency or trade.

Rattler was the third selection of the Saints in the 2024 NFL Draft, and he's likely in the cards for the team's future plans at quarterback. However, the fifth-round pick will immediately contend for the backup role behind starting signal-caller Derek Carr. With Jameis Winston gone to Cleveland, Rattler will contend with journeyman Nathan Peterman and 2021 fourth-round pick Jake Haener, the latter of whom has yet to make his NFL debut. Rattler started his collegiate career with high expectations at Oklahoma before losing his job to Caleb Williams in 2021, and he finished with a 19:8 TD:INT at South Carolina in 2023.
